As athletes, we push ourselves every day to be the best we can be. We train, we compete, and we put in the work to improve. But one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned isn’t about strength, speed, or skills—it’s about supporting the people around you.
There’s a lot of pressure in sports. Everyone wants to be the best, to be noticed, and to win. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others. Maybe a teammate gets more playing time, wins an award, or pulls off a highlight play. Sometimes, that can make you feel jealous or like you’re not good enough. But here’s the thing—bringing someone else down won’t lift you up.
Jealousy and negativity don’t make you better. They just hold you back. Instead of wasting energy being bitter, use that energy to get better. If a teammate is shining, celebrate them. Their success doesn’t take anything away from you. In fact, having strong teammates makes the whole team better. And when it’s your moment, you’ll want them cheering for you too.
The same goes for handling criticism. Not everyone will believe in you, and some people will doubt you just to bring you down. But their negativity doesn’t define you. Keep working, stay focused, and let your effort speak for itself.
A real team—whether it’s on the field, in the gym, or in life—is built on trust and respect. The best athletes aren’t just great players; they’re great teammates. They push each other, hype each other up, and have each other’s backs. And that’s something you can carry beyond sports—into friendships, school, and whatever comes next.
So next time you feel jealousy creeping in, turn it into motivation. Be the kind of teammate and friend you’d want in your corner. Because when we lift each other up, we all rise together. And just know, no matter what team you’re on, I’ll always have your back. Whether we’re wearing the same jersey or not, I’ll support you and cheer for your success, because real respect goes beyond the game.
From here to D1, the grind never stops.
